indicator

a braille sign that does not directly represent a print symbol but that indicates how subsequent braille sign(s) are to be interpreted 

initial-letter contraction

a two-cell braille sign formed by dot 5, dots 45 or dots 456 followed by the first letter or groupsign of the word 

item

any one of a precisely-defined grouping of braille signs used primarily in technical material to establish the extent of certain indicators, such as indicesÂ
